There was definitely something in the toilet. The spoor of a number of people James did not wish to think about, built up over a length of time James definitely did not wish to think about, was backed up to the point of overflowing, thick and dark and rancid.

There would be time enough for disgust later. There was something he had to do.

James rolled up his sleeve and tried very hard to tell himself this was nothing but mud. Holding his nose with his free hand made this much easier. Seeing a few slightly used kernels of corn in the bowl did not.

There would be time to think on that later.

"Oh, Timmy!" Mrs. Jones sighed and glared down at a very guilty-looking boy of three or four. "How many times do I have to tell you, that doesn't go in the toilet! Oh, Mr. Sunderland, I'm so sorry you had to go to all that trouble! Will you accept a check? How much is the bill?"

James dropped the toy in the sink and turned on the water. "Sure. That'll be fifty dollars."

"And that's coming straight out of your allowance, young man! Oh, wait here, I'll get the checkbook. And please feel free to use the shower..." After a moment's thought, she added, "...in fact, I insist." And off went Mrs. Jones for the checkbook, scolding her bawling son the whole way.
